How Much Does it Really Cost to Build a Mobile App in India?

The cost of building an app is the most common question I get asked, and the most common answer, "it depends," is genuinely useless when you are trying to plan a budget. Here are real numbers based on actual project experience, so you can start your planning from a grounded position rather than a guess.

App development cost in India sits significantly below US or European rates but the quality ceiling has risen substantially in recent years. A senior developer in Mumbai or Bangalore working at $50 to $80 per hour is competing at the same technical level as their US counterpart charging $150 per hour.

1. The Simple MVP ($3,000 to $8,000)

If you need a basic app to validate an idea before committing to full scale, an MVP typically includes user authentication, a few core content screens, a simple database, and basic push notifications. Nothing complex. The goal is to prove the concept works before spending serious money.

A well-structured MVP at this range takes about 4 to 6 weeks and breaks down roughly like this:

  • Design: 1 week for wireframes and high-fidelity mockups of the core screens
  • Frontend development: 2 weeks building the app UI and navigation
  • Backend development: 1 week for the API and database
  • Testing and bug fixing: 1 week

What you should NOT expect at this price point: custom animations, payment integrations, admin dashboards, or real-time features. Those all push you into the next tier.

2. The Mid-Level Product ($10,000 to $25,000)

This is where most serious business applications land. You get custom UI that matches your brand, proper animation and micro-interactions, payment gateway integration (Stripe, Razorpay, or UPI), real-time features like notifications or live data, admin dashboards for your team, and proper analytics integration.

Projects in this range usually take 2 to 4 months to complete, depending on the complexity of the backend and third-party integrations.

"Adding real-time features like in-app chat or live order tracking immediately adds at least 30% to 40% to your total budget. Real-time is technically complex on both the frontend and backend, requiring WebSocket infrastructure and state management that significantly increases development time."

3. The Enterprise or Complex App ($30,000+)

Apps with complex B2B workflows, multi-role user management, heavy third-party integrations, offline-first capabilities, or regulated industry requirements (healthcare, fintech) fall into this category. These typically involve teams of 3 to 6 people across frontend, backend, design, and QA and take 4 to 8 months.

At this scale, architecture decisions made early matter enormously. A poorly designed database schema at month one creates painful migration work at month six.

  • Annual maintenance: Roughly 15% to 20% of the initial development cost per year. For a $15,000 app, budget $2,250 to $3,000 annually for dependency updates, OS compatibility fixes (Apple and Google update their OSes yearly, breaking things), and minor feature additions.
  • App Store fees: Apple charges $99 per year for a developer account. Google charges a one-time $25 fee.

What Actually Drives Cost Up

After working on dozens of projects, the biggest cost drivers are almost never what clients expect. It is rarely the number of screens. It is almost always: unclear requirements that change mid-project (scope creep doubles budgets), third-party integrations that have poor documentation, complex user permission systems, and regulatory compliance requirements that create enormous backend overhead. Getting these defined clearly before development starts is the single best investment you can make before a single line of code is written.
